How to use your own internal, natural strengths to
reduce your chronic pain.
Chronic Pain Relief:
12 non-medical approaches
You might ask:
Why "non-medical" approaches?
"Medical approaches" is the catch-all
phrase for all of the procedures which are carried out or supervised by
physicians (M.D.s). surgery, prescription of drugs, hospitalization, use of
special orthopedic devices, and treatment by psychiatrists, physiatrists,
and orthopedic surgeons. These would all be examples of what I call "medical
approaches".
Help offered by chiropractors,
physiotherapists, acupuncturists, and massage therapists is not, strictly
speaking "medical" but these treatments involve hands-on approaches to the
client/patient and I don't include these under the heading of "non-medical".
For purposes of this ebook, "Non-medical" refers to approaches which the
client/patient (you) control. To use them you use the abilities you already
have and, with a little instruction or guidance from this ebook
you can become
your own specialist and work from within to relieve your pain.
You should know
Why only "Relief"? Why not "Cure"?
If you have been suffering from pain
for several months or years then you have probably visited and consulted
with your doctor many times. You may have been referred to other medical
specialists, or perhaps non-medical health care providers. You may have been
given one or more prescription drugs to take.
If any or all of these has happened to
you and your pain is still bad then clearly some very well trained people
and some powerful treatments (interventions) have failed to do the job.
That doesn't mean they won't succeed in the future, only that so far
they haven't worked to get you pain-free. If they had, you would have been
"cured" and this ebook would likely have been of no interest to you.
This ebook isn't trying to compete with these specialists and with the cures
which they bring about. The purpose
of this ebook is to help you to use your own abilities to reduce your pain;
to relieve you of the agony you may be experiencing.
That's it! That's the purpose of this
ebook. To reduce your pain or to relieve your agony.
You have a right to know
Who is David Abbey? Is he a quack?
The author of this ebook is me, David
Abbey, Ph.D.,a Registered Psychologist in Ontario, Canada. I have 35 years
of clinical experience with a wide variety of individuals, couples and
families. I had 30 years of personal experience of chronic pain (I talk a
little about this in the ebook).
I have worked with dozens of people
in chronic pain. Some of my clients were motor vehicle accident victims,
some suffered arthritis, others endured colitis or irritable bowel syndrome.
Over the years I saw some cancer patients prior to their medical treatment
and others afterwards.
The fact that I saw these people meant
that they - or their physicians - were searching for something in addition
to the standard medical treatments available. I'd like to tell you that I
was able to help all of these clients to reduce or to relieve their pain.
But some of these clients were looking
for a "magic bullet"; something that would "cure" them
over-night. I didn't have anything that powerful and they weren't interested
in practicing or developing their own abilities.
I'm happy to say that some were amazed at how they could use their own
abilities to relax, or to focus; or to use their imagination, or to experience
self-hypnosis. Some found they could enjoy more movement, or more rest, or that
they could change or reduce the amount of medication they were taking to control
their pain. (They did so after consulting with their physician.)
I was also a Professor of Applied
Psychology within the University of Toronto and taught counselling in the
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. I was able to work with dozens
of students who used the techniques in this ebook with their clients. Some
of them also had personal experience with chronic pain and we shared our
histories and our learning with one another. We all took a different path
but came across the same techniques in many different clinics, writings and
theories.
As a Psychologist I operate within a
code of ethics that restricts me from practicing outside my area of
competence or from offering medical advice. I believe this ebook will pass
both of these hurdles, not only in Ontario but also in the jurisdiction in
which you live.

You might be asking
Which approach will work for me?
That's a perfectly legitimate question and I don't have the answer to it.
About all I can say is that with a dozen techniques - some very different from
the others - you have a good chance of discovering something that will help. You
might even combine some approaches to suit your own needs.
In the field of pain management there is
no "one size fits all" approach. For that matter, many drugs do not operate in a
perfectly predictable way, either.
What you will need
to do is to dig in and start working with whichever approach seems to you to
be the most meaningful or sensible - given your type and level of pain and
your personal circumstances.
You might never try another approach because this first
selection works so well. Or, perhaps you will go on to explore the
others.
You're probably wondering
Will I be able to stop my medication?
This is NOT an objective of this ebook; nor is it a promise.
Once you experience pain relief the first thing to do is not to stop your
medication. The first thing to do is to make sure that the relief is
ongoing. That is, keep at the technique for a long enough time to be certain
that it's reliable and continues to be effective. Then talk over your
progress with your physician.
If you are
taking prescribed drug(s) then the person who wrote the prescription has a
legal responsibility for your health care - and this includes working with
you to make the decision to change your medication or to change its
dosage.
